Turning Back Time With NAD+

As people age, the processes that keep cells functioning optimally begin to decline. Central to these processes is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). This coenzyme is involved in cellular repair, energy production, and maintaining cognitive function. However, NAD+ levels decline with age, accelerating cellular damage and the onset of age-related diseases. NAD+ supplements claim to replenish these levels and possibly reverse signs of aging. However, despite these promises, the effectiveness and benefits of NAD+ are still under scientific scrutiny.

Cell repair and maintenance

NAD+ is believed to activate sirtuins, proteins that promote cellular repair and longevity. Sirtuins are involved in DNA repair, inflammation regulation, and mitochondrial functionality. As people age, cells are increasingly subjected to stress and damage, which can accumulate and lead to cellular dysfunction and diseases associated with aging. Sirtuins use NAD+ to help repair damaged DNA, regulate the cellular energy balance, and maintain cell integrity. The decline in NAD+ levels with aging directly impacts sirtuin activity, leading to decreased cell repair capabilities.

Improved mitochondrial function

Often described as the powerhouses of the cell, mitochondria play a major role in energy production. The efficiency of mitochondria, however, tends to decline with age, leading to reduced energy levels and increased susceptibility to various age-related diseases. NAD+ facilitates the transfer of electrons in the electron transport chain. This helps produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy currency of cells. NAD+ supplements may restore mitochondrial capacity to more youthful levels.

Better cognitive health

NAD+ helps maintain the health of neurons, which are the primary cells in the brain responsible for transmitting information. NAD+ helps regulate energy metabolism in brain cells to provide cells with enough energy to perform optimally. NAD+ also influences the activity of sirtuins, specifically SIRT1 and SIRT3, which are known for having neuroprotective properties. Sirtuins help with reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, factors that contribute to a decline in cognitive health.

Filling in nutrition gaps

NAD+ levels can be elevated through supplements like nicotinamide riboside (NR) and nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN), which are precursors to NAD+. These substances are converted into NAD+ in the body. Sirtuin-activating compounds (STACs) can activate sirtuins and offer synergistic effects when used alongside NAD+ boosters. NAD+ boosting foods like dairy, fish, mushrooms, whole grains, and green vegetables may also increase levels.

Is NAD+ worth the hype?

While NAD+ supplements offer promising benefits for aging, the effectiveness of these supplements is not fully backed up by science. Although NAD+ supplements may not be a fountain of youth, these supplements could help improve the quality of life as people age. Before consuming NAD+ supplements, consult with a healthcare professional to determine if there are any underlying health issues that may contraindicate the use of these supplements.
