Understanding Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a generic term for conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels. The heart is a pump that circulates blood via arteries tens of thousands of times every day. Cardiovascular disease begins with atherosclerosis, a buildup of fatty plaque in these arteries. This fatty plaque develops over a lifetime and leads to coronary artery disease, heart attacks, and heart failure. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in America among men and women. Supplements like coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) can play a role in improving heart health.

Symptoms and risk factors

Over time, blocked arteries cannot carry enough oxygenated blood to the heart. The heart can respond with a series of symptoms called angina. Symptoms include chest, arm, back, and shoulder pain, fatigue, and heartburn. If left untreated, angina can develop further with more severe, even deadly, consequences. There are some unavoidable risk factors for CVD, like age, gender, and ethnicity. However, most cases stem from lifestyle risk factors like smoking, alcohol use, diabetes, hypertension, and sedentary behavior. Consistent lifestyle changes like diet and exercise, along with medication, can help manage the condition.

What is CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10 is a naturally occurring compound that acts as an antioxidant in the body. This enzyme is found in almost all cells and plays a role in energy production and metabolism. The body naturally produces CoQ10 to store in the mitochondria for future use. Along with being a catalyst for energy levels, CoQ10 can help with conditions like diabetes, infertility, brain health, and much more.

The heart health connection

There has been evidence that coenzyme Q10 can help with heart disease and CVD symptoms. The antioxidant properties of CoQ10 may help with free radicals that affect the arteries. Studies show that this supplement can help manage blood pressure. Furthermore, the highest concentration of CoQ10 is found in the heart, and 3 out of 4 CVD patients have lower levels in the blood. Therefore, a supplement can help treat deficiencies, which, in turn, may improve heart health.

What can you do about CVD?

Coenzyme Q10 has some fantastic benefits and can even positively impact symptoms. However, this supplement is not a preventative method. CoQ10 must be used with an aggressive health and wellness plan to prevent the disease. A diet with minimal red meat and high fruit and vegetable intake is vital. Resistance and aerobic exercise, quitting smoking, and reducing alcohol use may help CVD patients live a long, healthy life. The symptoms of CVD should not be ignored or treated with CoQ10 alone. See a doctor for the appropriate tests, medication, and guidance to achieve a higher quality of life.
