Maintaining Moisture Balance For The Skin

Keeping the skin hydrated not only keeps it looking younger and healthier, but it also reduces the risk of premature aging. There are several ways to put moisture back into the body both from the inside and the outside. Here are some tips to help maintain the skin’s moisture balance.

1. Drinking water

It may seem blatantly obvious, but many people do not drink enough water throughout the day, and this can quickly cause dehydration, which makes skin look dull and dry. Boost moisture by drinking eight 8 oz glasses of water each day. Add fruit or cucumber to water to give it a spritz.

2. Moisture-boosting cream

There are many moisturizers on the market, but not all are created equal. For women who are looking for a cream which will replenish the skin’s moisture, it should contain ingredients which attract moisture. These include hyaluronic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, and aloe vera.

3. Hydrating foods

The skin can be hydrated from the inside as well as the outside. This can be done by eating foods which contain a high water content. Such foods include celery, watermelon, cucumber, bell peppers, berries, peaches, and plums. Eat them throughout the day to maintain moisture levels.

4. Limit bathing

This doesn’t mean skimping on personal hygiene. But spending too long in the bath or shower can deplete your skin’s moisture. Try to limit baths or showers to five minutes once a day. Make sure the water is lukewarm rather than hot to reduce moisture loss.

5. Minimize soap use

Many soaps contain harsh chemicals which can strip moisture and natural oils from the skin. Avoid soaps which contain deodorants, alcohol or perfume. Soap-free cleansers are much kinder to the skin than soap.

6. Exfoliate often

Exfoliating is important because it helps to slough off dead skin cells, which is particularly important during the winter months. Moisture cannot permeate the skin if dead skin cells are in the way. A gentle exfoliating scrub or mask should do the trick. Moisturizing straight after should rehydrate the skin.

7. Honey help

Not only does honey have antibacterial properties but it cleanses the skin and replenishes moisture. Applying a face pack made from honey can smooth dry and patchy skin and help it glow. Let raw honey sit on the skin for 30 minutes then rinse with tepid water. It can be used for dry patches on the elbows and knees and is also gentle enough for the face.

8. Oatmeal baths

An oatmeal bath is great for moisturizing the skin. Colloidal oatmeal has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Not only will oatmeal help to smooth your skin, but it can also sooth irritating itching. Moisturize immediately after to lock in the effects.
