The Natural Approach To ED

Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is a sexual health concern affecting approximately 30 million men in the US. ED can significantly impact sex life, causing frustration and a decline in libido. While prescription medications are a well-established treatment for ED, many men seek natural solutions to enhance sexual health. Fortunately, numerous dietary supplements can support healthy blood flow, improved libido and overall erectile function. These supplements come in various convenient forms, including capsules, powders, liquids, and herbal teas. Some of the most popular and widely recognized natural ED supplements include L-arginine, maca root, tribulus terrestris, yohimbine bark extract, fenugreek seed, horny goat weed, ginseng root and zinc.

Risk factors

Occasional ED can happen to any man, but if the problem occurs more often, a formal diagnosis of erectile dysfunction is made. Sexual arousal in men is a complex process involving the brain, hormones, emotions, blood vessels, and nerves. Men who are older, have certain diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure (BP), take certain medications, are overweight, or abuse substances are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction. Low testosterone or previous treatment for a prostate problem are other possible risk factors. When ED occurs, consider using the following supplements to regain normal function.

1. Vitamin D for sexual health

Many people are deficient in vitamin D, a critical fat-soluble vitamin. Research shows that low levels of the vitamin are associated with severe forms of erectile dysfunction. Getting a blood test to determine current levels and taking a supplement to increase the amount in the body, if deficient, is essential for sexual health.

2. Boost blood flow with vitamin C

To maintain an erection, sufficient blood flow to the penis is necessary. Some studies show that vitamin C may play a helpful role in improving blood flow in men. Vitamin C is easy to obtain from the diet in foods such as citrus fruits and bell peppers, but a daily supplement can help cover the bases and ensure enough is present in the body to keep blood flowing.

3. Supplement with L-arginine

For men with mild to moderate ED, L-arginine may help. Compared with a control group, men who took 1,500 – 5,000mg of the supplement experienced decreased ED and increased intercourse satisfaction. However, participants in the L-arginine group were more likely to experience side effects such as headache, flushing, and indigestion.

4. Ginseng can help

Another herb shown to help with ED is ginseng, a plant rich in antioxidants. When taken consistently, the herb can protect against oxidative stress in the blood vessels of the penis. There are no natural sources of ginseng, so getting the herb from a supplement is the best approach.

Supplement your sex life

Ongoing ED can be frustrating, leading to an unfulfilling sex life and decreased intimacy. Although data is somewhat limited, research shows that Vitamins D and C, L-arginine, and ginseng may help improve blood flow and boost libido. Before starting any new supplement, discuss the pros and cons, as well as recommended dosing with a healthcare provider.
