Who develops arthritis

Some people are more at risk of developing arthritis than others. About 1 in 4 adults develop arthritis in the United States. Some risk factors can be controlled such as being overweight or obese, joint injuries, smoking, infection, and specific occupations. Certain risk factors are not in one’s control, such as genetics, older age, and female gender.

Supplements for healthy joints

Sometimes natural remedies can reduce the risk of developing various ailments. Common supplements such as fish oil, turmeric, glucosamine or chondroitin aid in keeping the joints healthy. Other types of supplements such as devil’s claw, boswellia, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), or s-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAMe) help with lessening arthritis. Additionally, taking vitamin D3 and calcium keeps bones healthy. However, consulting with a healthcare provider or pharmacist is advisable before trying out any supplements.

Commonly used supplements

Fish oil has anti-inflammatory effects that can help reduce joint pain symptoms, especially in rheumatoid arthritis. Turmeric has a substance called curcumin which plays a role in lessening joint pain in osteoarthritis. Human cartilage contains glucosamine that aids in protecting the bones and preventing joint pain and inflammation. Studies showed that glucosamine sulfate impedes the progression of osteoarthritis. Similarly, chondroitin protects the cartilage and slows down the development of joint pain.

Other types of natural remedies

A study showed that MSM improved joint pain in patients with osteoarthritis. Devil’s claw has anti-inflammatory effects that may aid in reducing pain. Avocado-soybean unsaponifiables can protect and repair cartilage. Boswellia also has anti-inflammatory effects that help with joint pain. SAMe also improves joint pain and can be as effective as an anti-inflammatory medication.

Choosing the right product

Choosing the right supplement can be tough and confusing with so many options available. Some supplements have more ingredients than other products. However, more ingredients in one product do not mean that is the better one. Always consult the healthcare provider before purchasing a new supplement as some products interact with certain medications.

Early protection of my joints

Everyone wants to ensure one’s bones and joints are always healthy even after older age. Preventable risk factors are achieved with lifestyle changes such as losing weight. However, some risk factors that cannot be controlled are challenging. Therefore, taking supplements may reduce the risk of developing arthritis or slow down the progress of arthritis.
