Boosting Low Serotonin Levels
Low serotonin levels can lead to sour moods, restless nights, impulsive thoughts, and reduced appetite, all of which can lower a person’s quality of life. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved with regulating sleep, appetite, mood, learning, and memory. Some individuals may not want to resort to medication to treat their symptoms. Instead, people can turn to natural supplements to increase serotonin.
1. Tryptophan
L-tryptophan, shortened to tryptophan, is a precursor to serotonin production. Tryptophan is an amino acid found in turkey, chicken, fish, eggs, yogurt, and cheese, albeit in limited quantities. Pure tryptophan supplements can help more of the amino acid reach the brain. People may take tryptophan to get better sleep and improve mood.
2. SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine)
Several studies have shown that SAMe can increase serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine production, all of which play a crucial role in mood regulation. Patients should avoid consuming SAMe supplements with other serotonin-boosting supplements or medications to avoid drug interactions.
3. 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)
5-HTP is an endogenous amino acid used to increase serotonin levels. Research has shown that 5-HTP reduced symptoms of depression, especially when used with other mood-boosting medications and supplements.
4. St. John’s Wort
Studies have also shown that St. John’s Wort can be beneficial for people with mild depression. Patients also use St. John’s Wort to improve insomnia, PMS, and eczema. Patients should avoid taking St. John’s Wort with cancer drugs, birth control, or antidepressants due to adverse drug interactions.
5. Omega-3 fatty acids
Omega-3 fatty acids can be primarily found in certain fish, nuts, and seeds. Early research shows that people with a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids are less depressed compared to populations with less consumption. Omega-3 fatty acid supplements can be available for vegan using alternative sources like seaweed and algae.
A well-rounded treatment plan
Patients that feel depressed or anxious have numerous treatment options to choose from with the help of a doctor or specialist. While one person may feel better on antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications, another may receive similar benefits with a few mood-boosting supplements such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. Along with professional talk therapy, supplements become a part of a patient’s long-term treatment plan.
