Is Compounding The Answer?
Compounding pharmacies are popular options for people who need specialized prescription support that can’t be offered at independent, big-box, or grocery-store pharmacy outposts. A good specialty pharmacist can provide customized solutions to ensure that patients receive the necessary medication regardless of underlying conditions or potential contraindications from existing scripts, and to create novel delivery systems when standard drug formulations aren’t going to work. For most individuals, a compounding pharmacy is considered a go-to solution for patients with allergies or even when needing to fulfill a discontinued medication. However, within the special cases niche, people with hormone support needs can also receive necessary yet modified medications from a compounding pharmacy.

Hormone therapy and IVF
Whether for fertility, postmenopausal, or other needs, hormone therapy is a common treatment for a variety of conditions. However, most mass-produced solutions can come with side effects. For example, a woman undergoing ovulation stimulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) may find that standard hormone dosages might increase the risk of experiencing ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). A compounding pharmacy can adjust the dosage to ensure that patients receive a properly calibrated injection, suppository, or pill format that won’t result in excessive hormone exposure which can lead to side effects.
HRT and compounding
Especially for women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a common treatment recommended for both perimenopausal and menopausal individuals. While hormone treatments are a go-to solution designed to combat hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, insomnia and other symptoms associated with a drop in estrogen, the treatment isn’t without risk. Most notably, HRT can result in an increased risk of heart disease, blood clots, stroke, gallbladder disease and even uterine or breast cancer, depending on how long treatment lasts and if other medications are also being taken. A compounding pharmacist can potentially work with a patient to produce a specialized blend that combines standard HRT with progestin or estrogen to mitigate uterine cancer risks. Likewise, dosages can be adjusted for individuals with other underlying conditions that could be magnified through hormone therapy.
For testosterone balance
Women aren’t the only people who might benefit from hormone supplements. For men struggling with low T or testosterone, supplementation is often a go-to solution. Similar to HRT, testosterone can also be compounded to provide a precise dosage or create a different delivery method. For example, while some people might be able to take hormone therapy in pill form, other patients might find that creams, tinctures for under the tongue and even gels might be more effective to ensure proper dosage adherence.
Choosing compounding
While compounding hormones can be incredibly beneficial for many patients, not every individual may need to do so. People who don’t have underlying conditions, or who haven’t had negative reactions to standard manufacturer dosages in the past, may not need to seek out a specialty pharmacist to have prescriptions filled for hormone treatment. However, for patients who do fit into the above categories, consider speaking with a physician about the benefits of customizing hormone treatments or adjusting dosages to maximize results and minimize side effects.
