Guidelines for Pediatric Suppositories
Medication can sometimes be difficult for children to take orally, especially if vomiting is part of the illness. Suppositories can be an easy way to administer medications to sick children, but there are some basic guidelines for using suppositories to make it easier for the child and for the one providing the suppository care.
Make sure that the suppositories are stored in a cool space, such as the refrigerator, but do not freeze. If cutting them is required, they will be easier to cut if cold. If cutting is required, make sure to cut it lengthwise and not in across the middle. Follow the directions on the package carefully. A suppository is solid but it slowly melts when inserted in the rectum.
Always wash hands well before and after use. Remove the suppository from its foil wrapper, cut if necessary depending on the child’s weight, age, and size. You may need to moisten the suppository with cold water. Lie your child down on his or her side. Have the lower leg straight and the upper leg bent up towards the stomach. You might want to use a rubber glove if that feels easier to you. Hold the suppository and slowly insert it a half inch to one inch inside the rectum. Keep the child in a lying down position for at least 15 minutes afterward.
Our pharmacist at ReNue RX can also give you instructions that might specifically help your child; do not hesitate to ask for help and guidance. You might need to use a water-soluble lubricant on the suppository to help it insert easily.
Suppository therapy is a great way to meet the needs of children who need medication but do not tolerate the oral medication well.
