What Do Compound Pharmacies Do?

Compound pharmacies create specially formulated medications that are not commercially available. The medication may no longer be produced, contain ingredients that the patient is allergic to, or is in a form that the patient cannot tolerate. Whatever the reason, a compounding pharmacy may be the only way for a patient to getting the right medication.

Form and Formulation: 2 Amazing Benefits Of Compound Pharmacies

It’s all in the form

When a child needs medication that drug manufacturers only produce in pill form, but the child cannot swallow a pill, a compound pharmacy can create the same medication in liquid form. The medication can even be made with a tasty flavor that the child will like. Adults also may have difficulty swallowing a pill or a pill may cause side effects such as nausea, stomach pain, or other digestive issues. When that occurs the compound pharmacy may be able to create the medication in another form such as a cream, gel, or injection to avoid some side effects.

Fido needs medicine too

Pets are often customers of compound pharmacies. Any pet owner will likely agree that getting medication in a dog or cat is challenging. Compound pharmacies can change a medication to be in a more pet-friendly form or flavor.

Ingredients matter

Medications produced by drug manufacturers often contain ingredients that are an allergen to the patient. These fillers are not essential for the medication to be effective, however may be allergens or cause negative side effects to the patient. Examples of common fillers that may cause issues include gluten, dyes, alcohol and lactose.

A dose like no other

Pharmaceutical companies mass produce medications in standardized doses. That only makes sense as most patients will need only those standard doses. However, for a variety of reasons a patient may need a specific dose that is more or less than the standard. A compound pharmacy can create the individualized dose which may be a life-saving medication to the patient.

Compound pharmacy to the rescue

Decades ago all pharmacies were compound pharmacies. As mass production of medications began, compounding took a backseat. Now the use of compound pharmacies is on the rise again. Allergies are more easily identified so avoidance of those fillers or products require special compounding by a pharmacist. Manufacturers mass produce the medications that are in highest demand and those that are rarely prescribed are often discontinued. But to the patient that still needs that medication, the discontinuation of is concerning. Requiring a compound pharmacy may not be a daily occurrence and certainly not every medication but when a special need arises, find the nearest compound pharmacy. Having the ability to offer the individualized service needed is comforting and the benefits will be amazing.
