Our pharmacists at ReNue RX know the many benefits of vitamin D and the fact that most people are deficient in it. We’ll review a few benefits and explore a new possible benefit of vitamin D.
Vitamin D is produced when the body is exposed to sunlight. This can happen from moderate sun exposure of about five to ten minutes, two to three times weekly. Vitamin D can also be consumed in food or nutritional supplements. However, vitamin D also breaks down quickly and does not stay stored in the body, so it needs to be replenished regularly.
Vitamin D is known to help with maintaining:
- A healthy immune system, brain, and nervous system
- Healthy bones and teeth
- Regulation of insulin levels
- Lung function
- Cardiovascular system
- And other benefits
Recommended daily vitamin D allowances include:
- Birth to 12 months: 400 IU
- One to 70 years: 600 IU
- 70 years and older: 800 IU
- Pregnant and breastfeeding women: 600 IU
Current research, however, shows that a high dose of vitamin D3, taken at the onset of sunburn can help diminish redness, cell damage, and inflammation. Of course, research is still underway, but our pharmacists can possibly expect a vitamin D3 remedy to become a common clinical use against sunburn and its pain.
Studies showed that high doses of D3 – 200,000 IU – helped redness diminish, helped structural damage to be less, and decreased inflammation. These results indicate that arginase-1, found in vitamin D, has significant affect on sunburn.
