Probiotics and skin microbiome

Although probiotics can be found in foods like yogurt or kombucha, this element has been introduced in skincare products. In general, probiotics are essential to keep a healthy community of microorganisms. Skincare products containing live microorganisms are called oral or topical probiotics. Probiotics help to balance the skin microbiome and improve skin health. Some common probiotics include lactobacillus, lactococcus, bifida, and streptococcus thermophilus.

Skin disorders that can benefit

Probiotics are helpful in the application of various skin disorders. Based on recent research studies, probiotics are beneficial for acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and rosacea. Probiotics are also useful for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Besides skin disorders, probiotics affect promoting wound healing, such as diabetic ulcers. Lastly, clinical trials have shown the effectiveness of probiotics as an anti-aging agent.

Current research on topical probiotics

Initial studies on probiotics were conducted for oral administration. Further studies on topical probiotics have shown beneficial effects on many skin conditions. Although clinical trials are still ongoing, topical probiotics are still being used. Studies have found that topical probiotics are effective in acne, atopic dermatitis, and skin aging. More clinical studies are needed for psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, and wound healing.

Understanding topical probiotics work

In acne, the physical barrier of the skin is damaged. Topical probiotics enhance the skin barrier by producing ceramides. Additionally, topical probiotics aid in reducing papules and pustules and help alleviate skin irritation. Topical probiotics improve the clinical symptoms of atopic dermatitis and also improve ceramide concentrations in the skin. Effective as an anti-aging agent, topical probiotics lessen oxidative stress, impede aging, and enhance the skin’s barrier function. The skincare product has proven to be effective in treating facial wrinkles.

Topical probiotics are safe

Based on gathered evidence, topical probiotics are considered safe and do not pose a risk. Some people may be allergic to ingredients in the product, which leads to allergic reactions such as itching or rash. If an allergic reaction occurs, stop using the product immediately.

Planning to try out topical probiotics

Probiotic skin products efficiently improve skin health and manage some skin disorders. Always test a small skin area before applying on a whole surface to check for any adverse reaction. Every patient has different skin types and every product can react differently. Before trying out a product, consulting a pharmacist or dermatologist is advisable.
