Topical medications provide an alternative to oral products by offering a convenient delivery method that does not require swallowing a pill. Topical products can come in a variety of formulations, including creams, lotions, gels, shampoos, foams, and sprays.
Foams and sprays can be used to treat a variety of conditions, however, only a limited number of these products are commercially available. Compounding allows you and your doctor to work with your pharmacist to create products that are specifically tailored to you and your needs, including foams and sprays.
What are foams?
Foams are preparations that use inactive ingredients known for soothing the skin. They are rapidly absorbed and are able to cover large areas of the body as well as skin that is covered with hair.
Foams can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, including ulcerative colitis that is near the rectum, acne, and psoriasis.
- Ulcerative colitis: foams with corticosteroids or measalamine are common initial therapies for patients with ulcerative proctitis or distal colitis that affect the rectal area
- Acne: medicated foams with antiseptics or peeling agents can be very effective for treating acne. Some foams may also contain antibiotics that help kill the bacteria
- Psoriasis: topical corticosteroids are the mainstay for treating psoriasis and several corticosteroids and combinations ranging from potent to mild can be compounded into a foam that can easily be administered to large areas of the skin
What are sprays?
Unlike foams, sprays are not limited to topical use. They can be administered directly to the skin, through the nose, or in the mouth. Sprays used on the skin can provide temporary relief from pain and itching or act as a numbing agent. Nasal sprays can be used to treat migraines, provide relief from congestion, combat allergy symptoms, or even deliver estrogen for the treatment of menopausal symptoms. Throat sprays are commonly used for sore throats, toothaches, and other painful oral sores.
