Topical Muscle Relaxants and Analgesics

Topical Muscle Relaxants

Chronic pain is one of the most common and often debilitating problems in the United States. There are several types of pain that people may suffer from, including:

  • Muscle pain – caused by strains, sprains, stiffness, or injury
  • Joint pain – pain, stiffness, swelling, and weakness most often found in weight-bearing joints such as the knees, hip, lower back, or the hands
  • Tendonitis – pain or inflamed tendons around the joints
  • Bursitis – inflammation of the bursae often found in the knee, shoulder, or big toe
  • Neuropathic pain – pain caused by fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy, shingles, or injury
  • Vascular pain – caused by fatty build up in the arteries that cause the arterial walls to stiffen

Oral pain medications and muscle relaxants are often used to relieve these types of pain, but they can lead to unwanted side effects, such as: dizziness, gastrointestinal upset, sedation or reduced cognition, constipation, or even abuse potential and addiction.

Compounding, however, offers a customized approach to topical pain relief, addressing some of the challenges associated with the use of oral pain medications. Compounding is the art of preparing tailored medications to the needs of each individual. Your ReNue pharmacist can work with your physician to create the best topical muscle relaxer or analgesic to address your specific pain needs. Delivering the right medication directly to the point of pain means less medication can be used to achieve the necessary pain relief with fewer side effects.

Types of compounded topical pain medications:
Muscle relaxers, pain relievers, and counterirritants, that relieve pain by producing a less severe pain to counter a more intense one, are commonly used in people with chronic pain. Examples of these topical pain relievers include:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) – non-narcotic pain medications that treat mild to moderate pain and inflammation
  • Muscle relaxants – agents that penetrate the site of pain in the muscle tissue with fewer side effects than commonly seen with oral versions
  • Anesthetics – medications that produce a numbing sensation
  • Vasodilators – agents that increase the blood flow and cause a warming sensation
  • Pain blockers – agents that block pain receptors
  • Nerve agents – pain relievers and agents that interfere with the way nerve impulses are transmitted
  • Rubefacients – medications that increase blood flow to the area
  • Cooling agents – products that provide a cooling sensation

These agents can be compounded to be used alone or as part of a customized combination in order to provide pain relief.
