Blotting the shine away
Oily skin can cause a high shine throughout the day. Blotting papers are convenient, affordable, and absorb excess oils on-the-spot. Blotting papers won’t stop sebum production but can keep a face shine-free when needed most.
Clay masks help absorb the excess sebum oil and can be used to prevent acne. Individuals with oily skin have found effective results with a French green clay mask. Some masks come as powders and require a bit of water to form a creamier consistency. Clay masks are a gentler way to cleanse the skin compared to peel-off options. Honey masks are also a natural way to disinfect acne-prone skin.
Skin toners are applied before moisturizing and after using a facial cleanser. An alcohol-free toner removes dirt, makeup, and oil, as well as balances the pH of the skin. Toners can contain everything from antioxidants to anti-inflammatories used to close up pores and reduce oil production.
Sunscreen helps protect the skin from harmful UV rays and reduces the effects of aging on the complexion. The oils found in sunscreen, however, can end up clogging pores in faces with an overproduction of skin oils. Noncomedogenic sunscreen is an oil-free alternative that won’t clog pores.
Prevention is the first step
In some cases, oily skin can be alleviated with simple home remedies without the need for prescription drugs. But cases involving genetics and hormones can be harder to tame. Patients can adopt a healthy diet free from processed and sugary foods, as well as stay hydrated to avoid an overproduction of sebum. When home remedies and over-the-counter products can’t do the trick, patients should consult a doctor to manage oily skin and acne breakouts. Often, personalized skincare treatment is the best option.
